Dutchman dies in avalanche

A Dutch skier was swept to his death last night (Thurs/Fri) after being caught in an avalanche in Tyrol’s Arlberg ski area.

Police said four Dutch skiers had accidentally triggered the avalanche measuring 220x70 metres which dragged the dead man some 150 metres.

Two of the surviving skiers were taken to Innsbruck Clinic and one to a hospital in Zams. Doctors said the two Dutchmen at the clinic were in stable condition, and the hospital in Zams said it had discharged its patient today.

Statistics show that an average of 26 people die in avalanches in the Austrian Alps every year.
