Oppitz-Plörer is new mayor of Innsbruck

Christine Oppitz-Plörer was elected new mayor of Innsbruck yesterday (Mon) by the city council.

She received 29 of 40 votes, with nine voting against her and two ballots disqualified.

Oppitz-Plörer, 41, who has been deputy mayor after having successfully run for city office on the List for Innsbruck, succeeds Hilde Zach, 67, who resigned before the end of her term in office for health reasons.

The council elected Christoph Kaufmann, who also ran as a member of the List for Innsbruck, second deputy mayor. He received 23 yes and 15 no votes.

Oppitz-Plörer listed her priorities after her election: continuation of the city government’s past course, education, social standards, city partnerships and city development.

Oppitz-Plörer also praised her predecessor, noting that per capita city debt had shrunk from 300 to 130 Euros during her tenure in office. The new mayor called Zach "a great political task-master."

Zach announced on 24 February that she would retire from politics after getting cancer two years ago.

Elected mayor the first time in 2002, she was the first female mayor of a provincial capital.
