Winter is back in full force, with snow and icy temperatures expected across Austria in the next few days, according to Vienna’s Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
The reason is a low-pressure system in the Mediteranean area that is making temperatures plunge. For example, the low in Linz was minus 16 degrees Celsius this morning (Mon), the low in Salzburg minus 14.4 degrees and the low in Bregenz minus 9.7 degrees.
ZAMG climate expert Gerhard Hohenwarter said today this was the coldest March for five years. He added that temperatures were 25 degrees colder in many areas than they had been in the last week of February.
Low-lying eastern and southern regions would probably get 10 centimetres of new snow later in the week before the low-pressure system moved off towards the Black Sea.
Hohenwarter also noted that March was a month often characterised by great swings in temperature.
Temperatures tonight, he added, would be as low as minus 18 degrees in some places, it would begin snowing in southern Austria on Wednesday, and snow would spread across the country that night and continue into Thursday.
