Salzburg mayor rules out slashing public transport prices for the needy

Salzburg Mayor Heinz Schaden has claimed there was "no need" to change current regulations as NGOs called on the city government to slash public transport prices for needy people.

Several organisations appealed to the Social Democrat (SPÖ) to act after more and more people – including a single mother – claimed they used public transport without paying for a ticket as they could not afford it.

But Schaden said today (Tues) he saw "no need" to take action: "There are our social benefits laws. […] Making changes would be unfair towards those who only have a low income."

Astrid Lüttich of the city’s consultation office for single parents repeated her calls to react to the situation of poor people.

Social worker Max Luger of the Salzburg-Mülln parish meanwhile branded the city government’s attitude towards public transport issues a "disgrace for the city".

NGOs stressed poor people living in other Austrian cities would not have to pay the full price for their public transport tickets.

The reduced price for a month ticket for needy Vienna residents is 15 Euros, while everyone needs to pay 45 Euros for the same kind of ticket in Salzburg.
