Slight increase in Vienna's public transport customers

The number of passengers who used Vienna public transport rose by 1.02 per cent year on year to 811.9 million, it emerged today (Mon).

Vienna public transport agency Wiener Linien attributed the increase to the city public transport�s "internationally outstanding price-quality ratio."

It added that the beginning of a weekend night service on city undergrounds would probably mean a significant increase in the number of underground passengers this year.

City residents narrowly approved the service in a referendum last month.

Although Vienna public transport is almost universally acknowledged as being first-class, the same cannot be said for the entire country.

In that regard, the Austrian Traffic Club (VC�) recently reported that a fourth of Austrians needed better connections to public transport.

Club expert Martin Blum said supply was not keeping up with demand and it was especially important to give rail priority over roads.

He added that 60 per cent of Austrians regularly used public transport, which accounted for every fourth kilometre of mechanised travel or some 23 billion kilometres annually.

Blum said 27 per cent of Austrians could not reach the nearest town on public transport within 30 minutes and that the situation was worst in Upper Austria, where the number rose to 63 per cent. Things were almost as bad in Styria, Lower Austria and Carinthia, he added.

In Vienna, in contrast, anyone could reach the inner city within 30 minutes on public transport, he noted.

VC� also recently reported that Austrians rode on public transport for more kilometres per capita annually than all other Europeans except for the Swiss and the Czechs.

The club said the average Austrian travelled 2,890 kilometres on public transport annually, whereas the average Swiss went 3,320 and the average Czech 2,900.

Austrians are followed by Belgians, with 2,830 kilometres, and Italians, with 2,660. Latvians bring up the rear with 1,140. The EU average is 2,080.
