Former Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik has blasted the Burmese regime for its treatment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Plassnik, who is the Austrian Foreign Ministry’s special representative on international women’s issues, said today (Fri) that the Burmese High Court’s confirmation of the legality of repeated extensions of her house arrest constituted "another sorry chapter in arbitrary treatment of her."
Plassnik called the court’s decision "an expression of fear of a woman who bravely fights for democracy in her country and is deterred neither by threats nor by violence."
The Burmese dissident’s participation in upcoming Burmese elections would be "an important pre-condition for recognition of them as conforming to international standards," Plassnik added.
Aung San Suu Kyi, 64, is the leader of the Burmese National League for Democracy. She has spent 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest.
The Burmese military, which has been almost continuously in power since 1962, has been accused of massive violations of human rights, including torture, forced labour, persecution of national minorities and misuse of children as soldiers.
