Trains every quarter hour during Vienna night underground service

Trains will run every quarter of an hour during the weekend night underground service that will start in around six months, Vienna public transport agency Wiener Linien said today (Mon).

A spokesman added that the agency would present details of the new service recently approved in a city referendum in the middle of March.

He said the cost of the service every 15 minutes would not be much higher than for service every half-hour and the annual cost would be around five million Euros.

The agency had wanted to provide night service only every half-hour, but Social Democratic (SP�) Michael H�upl said it would be every 15 minutes.

The spokesman declined to say what, if any, impact the new service would have on the popular NightLine buses.

City Hall announced yesterday that preliminary figures showed that 35.90 per cent of eligible voters, or 411,075 people, had voted in the referendum from 11 to 13 February at 112 polling places or by mail.

A total of 25,926 people or 6.3 per cent of voters cast ballots at polling places, and the remainder voted by mail.

Residents cast ballots on a city toll on cars, weekend night underground service, the reemployment of concierges at city apartment buildings, all-day schooling and mandatory permits for ownership of fighting breeds of dogs.

Preliminary results show they approved all the proposals except for that calling for city tolls on cars, with 88.23 approving dog permits, 81.67 per cent supporting reemployment of concierges, 73.54 per cent supporting all-day schools, and 53.98 per cent endorsing underground weekend night service, whereas 74.85 per cent nixed city tolls on cars.

Officials said 40,409 ballots had been rejected as invalid.

Finals results will be announced by city election authorities on 24 February.

The referendum was the first in Vienna since 1991.
