Molterer gets EVP job

Former People’s Party (ÖVP) Vice Chancellor Wilhelm Molterer has been elected new head of a task group of the European People’s Party (EVP).

Molterer said today (Tues) his task would be to reform the party’s agriculture policy.

Dutchman Piet Bukman was named the group’s co-chief.

Molterer stepped down as ÖVP head after the party suffered massive losses in the 2008 general elections.

The Upper Austrian was then rumoured to be in the running as Austria’s new EU Commissioner, but ÖVP Science Minister Johannes Hahn was eventually named by the government as the country’s candidate.

He is set to be sworn in as European Commissioner for Regional Policy.
