Tyrol must pay �13,000 to owner of house damaged by salt

Tyrol authorities have been ordered to pay thirteen thousand Euros to a home owner in a row over a damaged facade.

The Austrian High Court ruled that Tyrol must pay the owner of a house damaged by salt strewn on a street in Gerlos in Tyrol�s Schwaz district in compensation for repair of its facade.

Dietmar Tschenett, the head of the provincial office for vehicle and machinery logistics, said today (Thurs): "We switched from crushed rock to salt on the streets of Gerlos in the winter in 2003, and the house owner made his claim for compensation in 2005."

He added the province had completed the switch from crushed rock to salt in the winter in 2004.

Tschenett said he did not expect any other similar complaints. If there were any, "we can simply point out that salt is used everywhere at present. We must use salt since we do not have anything else to use," he said.

The important thing was to use the right dose of salt but not more than necessary, he added.
