IKG lashes out over dog mag yellow star

The Austrian Jewish Community (IKG) has hit out at a dog magazine after it used a yellow star on its cover to publicise a debate over new laws on dog ownership.

IKG officials said today (Weds) dog magazine Wuff�s flyers with a picture of a dog with a yellow star with the inscription "B�se" (evil) showed "a complete lack of taste."

The magazine is circulating the flyers in its campaign against mandatory permits for owners of breeds of so-called fighting dogs. It is against the classification of particular breeds of dogs as fighting dogs and there will be a referendum on the issue next week in Vienna.

IKG claimed the use of a yellow star to protest so-called "dog racism" might even constitute a crime.

The Nazis forced Jews to wear yellow stars on their clothing to identify them as Jews and yellow stars are seen as a symbol of Jewish persecution.

IKG said: "Putting the examination of certain breeds of dogs on the same level as the persecution, torture and murder of millions of people shows the mentality of whoever is responsible for the use of such material."

Wuff�s publisher Gerald P�tz said: "We did not consciously use a Jewish star. We only used a star itself."
