Most snow in 20 years in Lower Austria

New snowfall records have been set in Lower Austria.

The 29 centimetres of snow on the ground at Retz in Lower Austria’s northern Weinviertel are the most since January 1987, Gerhard Hohenwarter from Vienna’s Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said today (Tues).

He added that the all-time record for snow on the ground at Retz - 35 centimetres - was recorded in March 1965.

He said a low-pressure system had been responsible for the heavy snowfall in the area, where it has been snowing for the last 10 days.

Hohenwarter warned that tonight might see record low temperatures in many places in northeastern Austria because of snow on the ground and clear skies.

"No wind, fresh snow, cold air and a clear sky are the conditions for a bitterly-cold night," meteorologist Christian Retitzky said.

He said temperatures might reach as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the Waldviertel, the Weinviertel and the foothills of the Alps tonight, adding that Vienna might see the coldest night of the winter.

The lowest temperature so far in the Austrian capital was minus 12.4 degrees on 21 December.
