Teen skier dies after crashing into rock

A Russian teenager was killed when she crashed head-first into a rock as she skied off-piste yesterday (Weds) at Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Salzburg’s Pinzgau.
Police said the 13-year-old from Moscow, who was not wearing a helmet, had lost control and flown 14 metres through the air and crashed into rocks in nearby woods.
She was taken to Salzburg emergency hospital but died soon after.
The death comes as pressure mounts to make helmets mandatory for skiers and snowboarders.
Upper Austria became the second province to make ski helmets compulsory for youngsters aged 15 and under late last year after Lower Austria passed similar legislation.
Experts have called for similar laws in other provinces.
