Staff swine flu vaccination plans

Staff could soon get swine flu vaccinations at work under new plans to turn them into vaccination centres, Vienna public health officials have said.

Vienna city public health office chiefs said yesterday (Weds) any business could register as a vaccination centre for its employees by applying for permission from the Vienna health-insurance fund and paying 6.55 Euros per dose of the vaccine.

Vienna residents have previously been able to be vaccinated only at one of the 21 public vaccination centres in the city.

The public health office reported there had been 15,300 new cases of swine flu in Vienna last week - 1,500 fewer than in the previous week. But office official Ursula Karnthaler warned: "That does not mean that the pandemic has peaked."

City health officials said the new cases of swine flu last week included 9,200 people aged 15 to 64, 5,600 people under 15 and 500 people 65 or older.

They added 30,000 to 45,000 people in Austria had come down with swine flu last week, compared to up to 47,000 the previous week. It said its figures were based on data compiled by the Vienna flu surveillance system.

Two people – an 11-year-old Italian girl and a 41-year-old German - have so far died of swine flu in Austria.

The health ministry reported that 201,565 people had been vaccinated against swine flu, including 38,656 people who had been vaccinated last week.

Many people have had to wait for hours to be vaccinated at specially set-up centres.
