Vienna man gets five years for knifing ex-wife

By Thomas Hochwarter

A 54-year-old Viennese man has been handed a five year jail sentence after a court heard how he left his ex-wife fighting for her life after a knife attack.

The man – who has 21 previous criminal convictions – was yesterday (Tues) found guilty of serious bodily harm after he attacked his 51-year-wife in August 2008 when she turned up at their flat to collect her things after they split up.

Prosecution calls for him to be charged with murder were rejected.

The man – a violent alcoholic according to his ex-wife – claimed he did not want to kill her. "I thought I had to hurt her after she hurt me by leaving me," he said.
