Jobless dad's kindergarten legal threat

A jobless dad is considering legal action after local authorities introduced a new regime for the children of the unemployed at kindergartens.

The man, whose six-year-old boy attends a kindergarten in Traun in Upper Austria’s Linz-Land district, claimed the municipal council had decided that the children of jobless parents would no longer be able to have lunch at kindergartens and would have to be picked up by 11:30am.

He said the new conditions broke laws on discrimination.

Now Social Democrat (SPÖ) Deputy Mayor Renate Prammer, in charge of kindergartens, has said the boy will be able to stay in kindergarten until 2pm each day.

The boy’s case comes a month after a girl in Lower Austria was expelled from a kindergarten when her parents failed to pay four thousand Euros in schools fees in September.

The newspaper Niederösterreichische Nachrichten reported the girl’s parents, who live in Felixdorf in Wiener Neustadt district, had run up a debt of 4,000 Euros to the school in four years for lunches and handicraft materials for their older children.
