Austria lagging on equality for women

By Lisa Chapman

Austria has slumped from 29th last year to 42nd this year on the issue of equality for women, according to the new "Global Gender Gap Report 2009" conducted by the World Economic Forum.

The country is ranked 103rd for economic equality for women, mainly because of the gap between men’s and women’s compensation for the same work where Austria is 26th among the EU’s 27 member states.

Austria has steadily fallen in the rankings during the past four years. It was in 26th place as recently as 2006.

The report ranks countries on gender equality on a scale ranging from zero to 100 per cent on the basis of economic participation and equal opportunity, educational level, political participation and health/life expectancy.

Austria recorded 70 per cent overall but only 57 per cent in the category of economic participation and equal opportunity - in 103rd place.

Green women’s spokesman Judith Schwentner called the results "shameful" and "a catastrophe" that demanded immediate response.

She called for obligatory, complete transparency on the subject of incomes and a strong link between subsidies for businesses and their fulfilment of quotas for women.

Schwentner also called on Social Democratic (SPÖ) Women’s Minister Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek to deal with the need for income transparency and quotas for women.

She also demanded quotas for women in training for technical professions often monopolised by men.
