Many Austrians say justice system is not fair

Only 27 per cent of Austrians believe "all citizens are equal before the law," according to results of a new poll by the Klagenfurt Humaninstitut released today (Weds).

Almost two thirds – 60 per cent – said they did not think there was equal justice for all and 41 per cent claimed politicians received privileged treatment by Austrian courts.

When asked who was most likely to do well in court, 32 per cent answered "the prominent".

Using school marks from one (the best) to five (the worst), 36 per cent gave the quality of the Austrian justice system a five, 20 per cent a four, 22 per cent a three, 15 per cent a two and only seven per cent a one.

The Humaninstitut polled 850 Austrians between 22 and 28 October.
