Eleven-member gang assault passenger train in Tyrol

By Lisa Chapman

A gang of 11 people - who police suspect were Romanian - attacked a passenger train in Tyrol this morning (Fri) and threatened and tried to rob its passengers.

The attempt failed, said police, thanks to good cooperation between the train’s engineer, Austrian Federal Railways’ (ÖBB) provincial headquarters and the police, and to the passengers’ "civil courage."

Police said passengers had informed the engineer of the attack at 11am, and he immediately notified provincial ÖBB headquarters, which, in turn, called police.

The engineer stopped the train shortly before arriving at the railway station in Fritzens bei Wattens in Innsbruck-Land district to stop gang members from getting off the train and to give police time to position themselves in the station to arrest the criminals.

Once police were in position, the engineer proceeded to the station, where gang members were arrested.
