'Croatia's Josef Fritzl' worked in Austria

By Thomas Hochwarter

A man dubbed the "Croatian Josef Fritzl" has worked for an Austrian company, it has emerged.

Online newspaper Croatian Times reported the man from Babina Greda in eastern Croatia – who has not been named by authorities – was accused of sexually torturing his four sons and a daughter.

The suspect’s wife said yesterday (Thurs): "He used to work in Austria, but the company went bankrupt, and he turned to alcohol. I'm not sure he knew what he did to our kids."

The woman stressed she had no plans to divorce from her husband despite the things the 48-year-old was accused of.

"Once he got drunk, he would take the kids into a room and start to masturbate", she revealed, adding that had gone on for the past two years.

"It would be a shame to leave him now", the woman claimed.

Police arrested the man after his oldest son, 28, had approached them, according to the Croatian media.

The media have already started to compare the suspect with Austrian Josef Fritzl, the 74-year-old who was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to having kept his daughter Elisabeth as a sex slave for 24 years in a cellar dungeon under the family home in Amstetten, Lower Austria.

Fritzl fathered seven children with her and allowed one boy to die after he was born with breathing complications.
