Vienna woman dies in bizarre tram accident

By William Green

A 58-year-old woman died yesterday (Tues) after a bizarre tram accident when she got her coat caught in its doors and was dragged along a road.

Police said the woman’s coat had got tangled in the doors of a line 71 tram she had just got off at 9:15pm on Monday at the Molitorgasse tram stop in Vienna-Simmering as it was heading along Simmeringer Hauptstraße towards its final stop on Schwarzenbergplatz.

The woman suffered a broken neck and a broken thigh as she was dragged down the street by the tram.

She was taken to hospital but died of her injuries yesterday.

Police said the tram driver had not noticed the door had closed on the woman’s coat and did not stop until pedestrians outside the tram flagged him down to stop.
