Oktoberfest beer record

Revellers at Europe's biggest beer festival downed a record 6.5 million litres of lager - despite falling attendance figures after a terrorist scare.

Visitor numbers fell to 5.7 million at the annual Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, but beer consumption soared to a record-breaking average of 1.14 litres per person while festival goers munched their way through 111 whole spit roasted oxen.

But the cost was a record number of drinkers - 8,608 - being treated by the Red Cross with nearly 800 of them hospitalised for alcoholic poisoning.

Police said the declining attendance figures were the result of a series of videos released by Islamic extremists threatening terror attacks if Germany did not remove its armed forces from Afghanistan.
