Boy dies of septic shock after nearly drowning

A seven-year-old boy has died of septic shock after he fell into a river.

Police said today (Weds) that the child identified as Simon from Kainbach bei Graz, Styria had fallen into the Stiftingbach River near his hometown on Saturday but was pulled out by rescuers.

He was taken to hospital and put into an artificial coma and doctors had said they thought he would recover.

But he died on Monday evening after doctors said dirty water he had ingested had produced the shock that caused his circulatory system and lungs to fail.
