Bad weather ravages Ybbs Valley

By David Rogers

Eighty soldiers were still working last (Sun) night in a mop-up operation after heavy rain caused massive flooding in Lower Austria’s Ybbs Valley last Friday night.

A provincial military spokesman said the rain had caused flooding, landslides and log-jams along Grestner Straße (B22) in the valley and soldiers had had to use heavy machinery to get mud and debris off the road.

It is too early to tell how high property damage in the Ybbs Valley will be and whether victims will get any compensation from the Lower Austrian government.

Victims in Vienna have already been promised compensation by city authorities. Wine and fruit producers in the capital have been told they will get 300,000 Euros compensation for crops badly damaged or wiped out by hail at the end of July.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) environment councillor Ulli Sima said as she made the announcement last Friday: "The city of Vienna will not leave producers who suffered damage standing alone in the rain."
