A 220,000-Euro stash of doping substances has been found at a hotel in Schwechat near Vienna.
Police said they found three pieces of confiscated luggage containing 352,000 anabolic tablets and 3,800 ampoules of testosterone destined for sale on the black market in the hotel’s luggage room.
Schwechat police said today (Thurs) they searched the hotel following a tip off from German cops who had arrested a 52-year-old with Canadian and Egyptian citizenship in March on suspicion of dealing in illegal medications.
German police said the man had obtained the substances in Thailand and set up an internet platform in 2008 that he used to sell them to people around the world.
They added the man had made many stops in Vienna and stayed at the hotel where he had left the luggage, using an unsuspecting employee to send it on to him in Germany.
The German police arrested the man in March as he was driving towards Austria. He had a large amount of cash and doping substances in the car.
Customs officials at Vienna International Airport (VIA) had also stopped the man last December and found substances worth 57,000 Euros in his luggage. The man explained at the time he was only passing through Austria en route to Canada, had studied pharmacy and had pharmacies in Egypt and Canada. He also claimed the substances were normal medicines.
