The Park&Ride location in Salzburg-Süd could soon be confined to history after the area was sold to the Shopping Center Alpenstraße (SCA).
Now local media are speculating that the new owner has probably got other plans than simply using the location as a commuter parking lot.
The Park&Ride location was sold by Johannes Graf von Moy to the SCA Immobilien Gesellschaft. SCA is part of the empire of Erich Kellerhals, founder of the electronic supermarkets Mediamarkt and Saturn.
He is already expanding the Shopping Center Alpenstraße project which should be open in two years. And parking space is needed for staff and customers.
But so far SCA has not revealed any of its plans in detail, although they have admitted that the public usage of the location might be withdrawn in favour of it being used by the firm for some purpose.
Salzburg mayor Heinz Schaden (SPÖ) said that the city had wanted to secure the location for commuters with a permanent rental contract but it had not been possible to come to a deal. He said that whatever SCA had planned they would not be able to shut down the commuter parking space for at least a year as they needed to give a 12 month notice.
He is however hoping that won't be necessary and is planning talks with SCA.
Work started on the SCA in April and when finished it will have around 24,000 m² of shopping space after an investment of 60 million euros.
