Austrian companies fall behind in CSR

The CSR Online Awards which are conducted on an annual basis came to Austria for the first time in 2011. The study which is conducted by communications consultancy Lundquist, revealed Austria’s top companies to be falling behind its European peers when it comes to online corporate social responsibility (CSR) communications.

The main aim of the online awards is to analyse the effectiveness with which large corporations communicate their CSR to a range of stakeholders online and also to encourage the use of the internet and company websites for sustainable development. CSR is traditionally in place in a company to ensure responsibility for their actions whether it be their impact on employees, the environment or consumers.

Almost half of Austria’s companies, the study revealed, do not offer a formal account of their social and environmental impacts online. Although oil producers OMV came out top closely followed by energy company EVN, they still fell behind other European countries. The average points scored by the top 30 companies in Germany were 49.2. In Austria, the average points for the top 20 companies was just 20.5. The study analysed the websites of Austria’s largest companies using 79 criteria and scored them out of 100.

OMV was announced today as the best company for online CSR communications in Austria in 2011, scoring 59 points with EVN in second scoring 53.3 and electricity provider Verbund in third with 47. The top performers were recognised in Lundquist’s 3rd CSR Online Awards Seminar in Venice on 27 and 28 October.
