London Olympics Opportunities for Austria

By John Morris

The London 2012 Olympics could bring big business opportunities to Austria, experts said in a conference in Vienna today (Thurs).

Speaking at the "London 2012 and the Olympic Legacy Event" in Vienna today (Thurs),  Austrian Trade Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Georg Karabaczek highlighted the clear opportunities for Austrian companies which the 2012 international event will provide.

The UK is Austria’s 7th most important global market with 2.9 billion Euros of trading annually. Even the recent recession and the weakening of Sterling against the Euro did not damage the trade links between the two countries.

Such co-operation is only set to improve with the London Olympics, and Rebekah Gomez of "Win the BID", a privately owned UK based company supporting foreign businesses with tenders for contracts, said there was a particular need for security services to ensure the safety and security of the complete Games. Security will be a major issue for the huge event, and the UK does not have enough domestic suppliers to cope with the task alone. In the summer of 2012, twenty three thousand athletes and officials will be housed in the 6.5 square kilometre Olympic site, with the media centre housing an additional 20,000 journalists and media personnel.

Gomez' colleague Sarah Green explained, "The potential for sustainable business for interested Austrian companies exists as the Olympic plan is to develop the whole of East London providing a significant long lasting "Legacy" of opportunities".

All tenders will be handled over the portal CompeteFor which is part of the London Business Network. An important part of British business ethics is transparency in the tender process, and therefore any contracts awarded will be released online for the public to access. This also allows businesses to petition as suppliers to contract winners.

Certain criteria are highly prioritized by the UK buyers, such as Fair Trading, Quality Management Statement, Health & Safety, Environmental, Equality and Diversity ensuring gender and cultural issues are addressed since London is a highly cosmopolitan city where integration is highly prized.  Austrian companies tendering for contracts are invited to look at the profiles of competing companies to see the quality of the bids. However, a 3 year record of accounts is mandatory as London is seeking solid suppliers to ensure the Olympics are served with the most reliable and professional sources.

The Austrian Trade commissioner in London Georg Karabaczek and his staff are well prepared and standing by to facilitate all registered Austrian companies seeking assistance in their bids for the London Olympics.
