BP Austria unaffected by Gulf of Mexico drama

British Petroleum’s (BP) business in Austria is not affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, according to a spokesman for the company.

A representative for BP’s Austrian operations said today (Mon) the firm had not recorded a decrease in customer figures following the collapse of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in April.

He added however that the number of customers asking all kinds of questions about the incident and how it affects the company’s businesses while fuelling their cars at BP’s 430 stations has risen.

BP and Austrian oil and gas firm OMV dominate the Austrian petrol stations market. BP Austria has around 260 employees.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace Austria activists put up a giant poster on the façade of the British company’s Austrian headquarters in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria, calling on the firm to abandon its deep sea drilling.

Greens chief Eva Glawischnig was confronted with harsh criticism recently as it took her more than a months to ask the Austrian government to abandon their support of mineral oil trading.
