Siemens Austria to lay off 500 to 600

Siemens Austria said today (Fri) it would lay off 500 to 600 of 2,000 workers in software division SIS (IT solutions and services) in the near future.

Firm spokesman Harald Stockbauer said the remaining workers in SIS would be placed in a Siemens subsidiary as parent German Siemens got rid of SIS. He said additional workers would probably be laid off during the process.

He added: "SIS has itself decided to divest itself of its telephone development business." He noted that SIS would have operational autonomy in the future.

Siemens Austria chief Brigitte Ederer and board member Wolfgang Köppl told employees of the impending layoffs yesterday morning and of an employee information event on 8 April.

Munich technology firm Siemens announced yesterday it would lay off 4,200 workers in its IT division SIS.

Siemens will lay off 2,000 of its 9,500 IT workers in Germany by autumn 2011. It said the layoffs would cost it millions of Euros. SIS has 35,000 employees around the world, including 2,500 in Austria.

Workers in Siemens’ Austrian software division had threatened to strike earlier this month because of threatened layoffs.

Workers’ council chairman Ataollah Samadani said then that "unconfirmed information has it that workers in some areas of SIS are to be laid off." A recent workers’ assembly authorised the employees’ union to engage in strike action at its own discretion.
