More foreign holidays planned this year

More Austrians are planning on holidays abroad this year after 2009 saw a drop in numbers, according to a study by public opinion research agency Karmasin.

Simion Giurca, the president of Corps Touristique Austria, said yesterday (Thurs): "The situation looks very good." He added that study results showed that 54 per cent of Austrians were planning a holiday this year, with 79 per cent of them opting for a foreign adventure and 46 per cent of them having already booked their vacations.

Of Austrians headed abroad, Italy and Greece are each the choice of 22 per cent, followed by Croatia at 15 per cent and Germany and Spain, each at 10 per cent. Six out of 10 Austrians going abroad will have a beach holiday.

Twenty-five per cent of foreign holiday-makers want warm weather, 17 per cent beach life, 15 per cent culture and 15 per cent the discovery of new destinations.

Eighty-three per cent are planning to go on trips longer than four days.

Three-quarters of Austrians have holiday budgets between 1,000 and 2,000 Euros, with 67 per cent planning to spend as much as in the past.

The aircraft is the transport choice for 71 per cent of Austrians going abroad, followed by private automobiles.

Corps Touristique is an association of tourism offices in 36 countries. The Austrian Tourism Office is one of its members.

Statistik Austria reported yesterday that, whereas only 27.5 per cent of Austrians had taken big vacations in 1969, 59.3 per cent had done so in 2009.

Only 12 per cent of Austrians took winter vacations in 1969, but 32 per cent did in 2009, the agency added.
