Burton to move whole production to Austria

Burton Snowboards announced it had plans to move its manufacturing facility and 43 jobs from the US to Austria.

Company founder Jake Burton Carpenter is today (Fri) quoted in American media as saying it cost too much to continue making the boards at the firm’s plant in South Burlington in the US state of Vermont.

He said the manufacturing centre will be relocated to Uttendorf in Austria’s Salzburg province – where Austrian firm Keil Ski produces on assignment by Burton – in June.

Keil Ski officials declined to comment on the news to the Austrian Times today.

Burton added the firm – the world’s first snowboard-making factory and biggest snowboard brand in the world today – will keep its international headquarters in Burlington.

CEO Laurent Potdevin explained: "The environment here [in the US] is not very manufacturing-friendly. A board costs more to make than you sell it for."

The decision means that the company, which was founded in 1977, will no longer produce snowboards in the United States apart from a small number of prototypes.

These announcements come just one month after the company dismissed 15 employees at its headquarters in a second round of layoffs in less than a year.
