Lauda to promote Romania 'to make destination profitable'

FlyNiki CEO Niki Lauda revealed plans to promote Romania in Austria.

The former Formula One driver was in the Romanian capital Bucharest yesterday (Tues) to officially inaugurate his airline�s connection between the city and Austrian capital Vienna which began on 1 February.

"Bucharest and Romania need more promotion in Austria. I�m going to promote the new flights between Vienna and Bucharest," he said according to the Romanian Times.

Lauda added he planned to make an additional investment of 1.5 million Euros in Romania, but remained tight-lipped over details.

The entrepreneur only said: "I�m going to invest to make this destination profitable."

Lauda also said: "We are analysing the possibility of launching new flights to other destinations in Romania, possibly on the Black Sea coast, starting in summer 2011."

Romanian Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, who met with Lauda yesterday, suggested to him that seaside town Constanta would be a good future destination that would attract more Austrian tourists to Romania.

FlyNiki currently offers six flights a week between Vienna and Bucharest.

Lauda founded budget airline FlyNiki in 2003 after competitor Austrian Airlines (AUA) took over Lauda Air to make the firm its charter airline.

FlyNiki, which has 450 employees, had around 2.6 million passengers last year.
