Future bright as Orange doubles net profit

Austria’s third largest mobile services provider France-Telecom subsidiary Orange reported today (Weds) a net profit of 35.7 million Euros in 2009, twice as much as in 2008.

The firm’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) rose from 167 million Euros in 2008 to 182 million Euros in 2009, and its Ebitda margin went up from 28.1 per cent to 32 per cent.

Orange’s turnover went down by 3.8 per cent year on year to 569 million Euros last year, and the number of its customers rose by seven per cent year on year to 2.19 million.

Firm chief Michael Krammer said consolidation of the mobile phone sector would make sense but declined to say whether Orange was interested in acquiring the smallest company in the Austrian market, "3," or in a merger with T-Mobile, as had occurred in the UK.

He did note, however, that Austrian market leader Mobilkom was behaving "very aggressively" in the area of pricing. It remained to be seen, he added, how long the price war that had begun in the third quarter of 2008 would continue.

Krammer, who gave his employees a job guarantee despite recession in each of the past two years, said he wanted to keep their number no higher than 800. He added his team would try to come up with innovative products for small businesses and present a 42-Mbit/s network at the end of 2010 that was being tested in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria.

He said that faster networking would help manage exploding data volume in mobile-telephone use. He noted use of the iPhone by 120,000 customers had helped cause data handled by Orange to double within one year.

Krammer also said he wanted to partner with another firm in bringing more applications to the market.
