Pollmann to end part-time work next month

Car industry supplier Pollmann Austria announced yesterday (Mon) that it would be taking employees off part-time work and making them full-time as of 1 April.

The firm, based in Karlstein an der Thaya, Lower Austria, cited growth in the European market and the boom in the car distribution business in China as the reasons behind the decision.

Firm chief Robert Pollmann said: "After 12 months of part-time work, we finally have good capacity utilisation in serial production."

Noting demand for the firm’s products had been increasing since December, he said he was relieved to be able to put all employees back into full-time work.

Pollmann added that the firm would diversify into the medical and household technology sectors to decrease its dependence on the international car-making industry.

The firm had already taken its first step in that direction with production of a vibrating medical shoe, he noted.

He also announced that the firm would increase its number of apprentices.

Pollmann has plants in the USA, China and the Czech Republic.

Although a number of Austrian firms have ended part-time work, the number of the unemployed in Austria keeps rising.

Statistics presented by the labour ministry at the beginning of March showed that more people than ever were out of work in February.

Officials said it was the first time in the country’s post-war history that as many as 312,906 people had had no work in that month.

If people taking re-education courses offered by the Labour Market Service (AMS) are considered, the February figures jump to 396,332, a 10.2 per cent year on year increase.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) Labour Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer warned that 2010 would be a "very difficult year".
