Delicatessen product producer Mautner Markhof and spice producer Kotanyi are planning to expand abroad, it emerged yesterday (pictured: Kotanyi boss Erwin Kotanyi).

Two Austrian food firms to expand abroad

Delicatessen product producer Mautner Markhof and spice producer Kotanyi are planning to expand abroad, it emerged yesterday (Weds).

The business newspaper WirtschaftsBlatt cited Mautner Markhof chief Alexander Thönnessen as saying that his firm would enter the Greek market this year and begin supplying Greek retail-trade establishments, as well as spend three million Euros on a vinegar facility in Vienna-Simmering.

The paper added that Lower Austrian spice and herb producer Kotanyi Gewürze would raise its herb market share in Turkey to between 15 and 20 per cent after opening a subsidiary in Istanbul with 15 employees in mid-2009.

Kotanyi chief Erwin Kotanyi was quoted as saying his goal was to ensure that every supermarket chain in Central and Eastern Europe would carry his firm’s products. He said the most growth potential was in Serbia and Romania.

He added that the Russian market would contribute 15 per cent of Kotanyi’s turnover in 2010.

Kotanyi Gewürze had become a 100 per cent family business again, the company announced last November.

Erwin Kotanyi said the firm, based in Wolkersdorf, had repurchased the 25 per cent interest that salt producer Salinen AG had held since 1989.

He did not disclose the price of the deal but said it was "reasonable for both sides."

Salinen chief Stefan Maix said the synergies from the purchase of an interest in Kotanyi had not materialised and so his firm had decided to sell it.

Kotanyi said the firm had financed the repurchase itself and would recoup the expense in three to five years through cash-flow and growth. He added the deal would not hinder growth. "We want to make use of all opportunities," he said.
