Former Austrian flagship carrier Austrian Airlines (AUA) said today (Weds) they had more passengers last month compared to the same period last year.
AUA officials announced the company had 646,000 passengers in February 2010, up by four per cent compared to its statistics for the same month in the previous year. They stressed however that February 2009 was an exceptionally bad month with a year on year 16.4 per cent decline of passenger figures.
AUA was taken over by German aviation giant Lufthansa in September. Lufthansa meanwhile had 3.5 million customers last month, 7.2 per cent less than in the same month last year.
The speculation is that this could have been a result of the firm’s pilots holding a one-day long strike and passengers changing their plans and booking flights provided by other airlines instead.
AUA will announce 2009 earnings and turnover figures tomorrow.
The company is currently issuing a harsh cost-cutting regime to get back into the black. Hundreds of employees lost their jobs over the past few weeks, with thousands more expected to follow by the end of this year.
