Red Bull denies interest in German digital radio market

Salzburg energy drink producer Red Bull has denied that it is interested in entering the German digital radio market as reported by German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt.

A Red Bull spokesman said yesterday (Mon) that the firm had no intention of doing so although it had been involved in talks about technical developments in the media sector.

The German newspaper had reported that Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz was interested in obtaining a licence for German digital radio standard DAB plus.

The Austrian media have claimed that digital radio is in its infancy in Austria.

Red Bull, which has its headquarters in Fuschl am See in Salzburg province, reported last month that it had sold 3.906 billion cans of its trademark drink in 2009, down from 3.921 billion the previous year.

Red Bull, the most powerful Austrian brand in the world, said turnover declined by 1.7 per cent year on year to 3.323 billion Euros. Officials, however, claimed the firm had reached its output target.

The company said its business value increased "despite difficult circumstances" in important markets such as in the Far East, Brazil and Germany.

Red Bull has also been focusing on sponsoring world class sportsmen and promising talents in popular disciplines and extreme sports.

Red Bull named its Formula One team’s successes, football team Red Bull Salzburg’s performance in the Europa League and the launch of its trademark energy drink in Denmark and Norway as "highlights of 2009".

The company also said it was satisfied with how its TV station ServusTV has developed since starting broadcasting in October.

Red Bull said its focus for the future was to expand in Africa, Japan, India and Russia.

The company had around 6,800 employees in late 2009 in 160 countries, up from around 5,700 in the previous year.
