Vienna hotel prices up against European trend

While the cost of hotel rooms in Vienna have soared, prices in 34 of the 50 most popular European citieshave declined year on year.

International online hotel rating platform Trivago announced today (Tues) the average price for a hotel room in Vienna went up by two per cent this month to 116 Euros compared to March 2009.

The average price of hotel rooms in Europe meanwhile stayed constant at 102 Euros from February to March 2010, the platform added.

The website compares hotel prices in countries all over the world with its Trivago Hotel Price Index (THPI) every month.

Geneva, Switzerland, remains the most expensive city in Europe this month with an average hotel room price of 195 Euros.

Vienna tourism officials said recently there were 604,000 overnights in the city in January, up by nine per cent compared to the same month last year.

The most significant increase was recorded for guests from Serbia with a 80 per cent year on year raise. Authorities said this development was linked to the European Union’s decision to lift the visa requirement for people from Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro last December.
