Number of working women on the increase

The number of working women, 40 per cent of whom work part time, has risen, according to Social Democratic (SPÖ) Labour Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer.

He said yesterday (Sun): "In the past 10 years, the number of female employees has risen by 17 per cent or 234,886 to 1,587,961."

He also noted female unemployment had risen more slowly than male unemployment since the beginning of the recession.

"According to [the EU Commission's statistics agency] Eurostat’s calculations, Austria had a female unemployment rate of 4.6 per cent in January, the second lowest in the European Union after the Netherlands," he said.
