Household energy costs up six per cent

Household energy prices rose 6.1 per cent in January compared to the same month last year.

The Austrian Energy Agency reported today (Fri) that prices in January were 1.3 per cent up on December 2009, according to its energy price index (EPI).

The agency said super and normal petrol cost 21.3 per cent more in January than a year earlier, heating oil 14 per cent more and diesel fuel 8.7 per cent.

Electricity rose 0.9 per cent in January year on year, but natural gas was 10.9 per cent cheaper.

Wood briquettes cost 15.1 per cent more and firewood 2.4 per cent more year on year in January.

The consumer price index (VPI) was 1.2 per cent higher in January than a year earlier and 0.3 per cent down on December 2009.
