ÖBB boss Klugar to leave

Peter Klugar, the head of Austria’s Federal Railways (ÖBB), has announced he would leave the company by the end of this year.

Klugar said last night (Thurs): "I decided not to reapply for the function as head of the firm after careful considerations."

Klugar’s contract runs until the end of this year. Christian Kern, board member at energy provider Verbund is rumoured to succeed him.

The ÖBB has been accused of mismanagement for failing to get into the black. Reports claim several fatal accidents could have been avoided had the company not lowered its safety standards and reduced investments in educating staff. And it emerged recently that the average retirement age of ÖBB staff was 52.
