FlyNiki stakeholder Air Berlin's passenger numbers up

FlyNiki stakeholder Air Berlin's passenger figures jumped 3.1 percent on a year earlier, the company said today (Fri).

The German budget carrier carried 1.95 million passengers last month, up on the figure for the same month in 2009.

A one-day strike by Lufthansa pilots in February may have helped the figures, the company said, as it used bigger planes on some connections affected by the dispute.

Air Berlin increased its stake in Niki Lauda’s FlyNiki by 25.9 per cent to 49.9 per cent last month. The German company now also has an option for a total takeover of the Austrian low-cost carrier.

Lauda, who founded FlyNiki seven years ago, said the firm would remain Austrian.

"The airline is Austrian, I’ve got an Austrian passport. That’s it," he stressed.

FlyNiki has 450 employees. It had around 2.6 million passengers last year.
