Austrian oil and gas production up

Austrian oil and gas production rose last year, new figures have shown.

The country increased production of oil by six per cent to 998,451 tonnes and of natural gas by 2.4 per cent to 1.58 billion cubic metres year on year in 2009, according to the Federal Geological Agency.

It said today (Tues) production of oil in the Molasse zone in Lower and Upper Austria and Salzburg had risen by 26.6 per cent year on year to 100,893 tonnes last year.

Most production, as before, had occurred in the Vienna Basin, where it increased by 4.1 per cent year on year to 897,558 tonnes.

OMV-Austria Exploration & Produktion raised its production by 4.4 per cent to 874,709 tonnes, and Rohöl-Aufsuchungs-Aktiengesellschaft (RAG), in which Lower Austrian energy provider EVN has a 50 per cent interest, raised its production by 18.9 per cent to 123,743 tonnes year on year.

The agency added that production of natural gas in the Molasse zone had declined by 22.6 per cent year on year to 324 million cubic metres in 2009 but had risen by 11.7 per cent year on year to 1.26 billion cubic metres in the Vienna Basin.

OMV raised its production by 9.6 per cent year on year to 1.34 billion cubic metres, whereas RAG lowered its production by 22.6 per cent year on year to 324 million cubic metres.

Around the world last year, the agency added citing Oil & Gas Journal, there was a decline of 3.2 per cent in oil production to 3.5 billion tonnes or 70.5 million barrels a day, the first yearly decline since 2002.

Countries that did not belong to the Organisation of Petroleum Importing Countries (OPEC) accounted for 58 per cent of oil production last year.

There were 55 years of proven reserves of oil and 61 years of proven reserves of natural gas at the end of last year, the agency said.
