Chipperfield-designed shopping centre to open

Austria’s biggest inner-city shopping centre is set to reopen after being redesigned by British star architect David Chipperfield.

The Kaufhaus Tyrol in Innsbruck, which began business more than 100 years ago, will reopen on 4 March featuring a wide range of shops covering 30,000 square metres.

Chipperfield’s design of the shopping centre’s storefront has been praised as resembling a museum's rather than that of a shopping centre.

Real estate investor Rene Benko, whose Signa Holding has a 50 per cent share in the mall, said the realisation of the project will give the province’s economy a boost.
