Danish €148mn motorway deal for Strabag

By William Green

Austrian construction firm Strabag SE said today (Thurs) it had won a motorway construction contract from the Danish government in a public-private partnership (PPP).

The Danish government chose the MG-Kliplev Motorway Group consortium including Strabag to build a 26-kilometre-long stretch of the M51 motorway between Kliplev and Sonderborg and 18 kilometres of other roadway, as well as seven interchanges, the company said.

The consortium will invest 148 million Euros in the project, earning the money back from tolls during a 26 year-long concession.

Strabag chief Hans Peter Haselsteiner said: "Based on experience with the M51, the government may opt to build other motorways on the basis of a PPP."

The firm has been investing in Scandinavia since 2008 and invested 220 million in the region in 2009, he added.

Strabag is also involved in the first motorway PPP in Austria building the north motorway A5 between Vienna and Mistelbach. The firms involved have a contract worth one billion Euros.

Strabag’s construction activities were worth 9.407 billion Euros, up from 9.382 billion Euros year on year over the first three quarters of 2009.

Company officials have said they are expecting a stable 2010 business year but predict a downturn in the construction industry in 2011.

Strabag has around 76,000 employees. The firm’s key markets are Austria and Germany, but it also has major operations in Central and Eastern Europe.
