Austrian Airlines’ (AUA) officials have denies rumours that its new network manager is being lined up to become its next board chairman.
The Kurier newspaper reported Elton D’Souza, who will become network manager on 1 January, would take on the chairman post as well.
But an AUA spokesman denied the report today (Fri). He said: "(AUA’s new owner) Lufthansa has made clear that it trusts AUA’s board and supports its current course. We are concentrating on our work and our efforts to get AUA back on the right track."
He added that D’Souza, 50, would support AUA’s present course in his new job as vice president for network management.
Lufthansa officials also dismissed the rumours.
D’Souza, who is a top manager at fellow Star Alliance airline Swiss, will also handle pricing and capacity for AUA. Kurier said that current AUA co-chairmen Andreas Bierwirth and Peter Malanik would work under him after 1 January.
Meanwhile, Upper Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) Governor Josef Pühringer has rejected AUA’s appeal for financial support for its Vienna – Linz route.
The governor confirmed reports claiming the struggling airline had contacted the provincial government to discuss subsidies but said that "financial support by Upper Austria is out of the question".
AUA – which was taken over by Germany’s Lufthansa last September – recently reported losses of 75.7 million Euros for the third quarter of this year. Its loss in the same quarter of 2008 was 16.4 million Euros.
The airline recently informed the Labour Market Service (AMS) it would dismiss up to 170 employees at its subsidiary Tyrolean as part of drastic cost-cutting measures.
