Bumper fruit harvest despite bad weather

By William Green

Fruit farmers have reported a bumper harvest this year – despite record heavy rains last spring and early last summer, according to Statistik Austria.

It reported today (Thurs) that the overall harvest was 10 per cent larger - 264,200 tonnes - than last year.

The apple harvest was the biggest in 10 years at 223,900 tonnes. Apples comprise 84 per cent of all fruit harvested in Austria.

The apricot harvest of 6,000 tonnes set a new record and was two-thirds higher than the long-term average.

But the berry harvest was 10 per cent lower at 18,400 tonnes.

The agency said crops loss due to weather had varied widely according to region, but plant-protection measures including the use of hail nets had limited damage.

It added that July hail had caused extensive damage to fruit in the Vienna area.
