Wine and fruit producers to get compensation

By Lisa Chapman

Vienna wine and fruit producers are to get 300,000 Euros compensation for crops badly damaged or wiped out by hail at the end of July, it has been announced.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) environment councillor Ulli Sima said as she made the announcement today (Fri): "The city of Vienna will not leave producers who suffered damage standing alone in the rain."

She said a survey showed damage had been extensive.

Wine producers in Vienna-Döbling had lost 70 per cent of their grape crop, and fruit-growers in Vienna-Donaustadt had lost between 70 and 100 per cent of their harvest.

Sima said compensation would be paid to owners of some 270 hectares of vineyard in Vienna-Döbling and to owners of 40 hectares of orchard in Vienna-Donaustadt. She claimed the money would amount to around 50 per cent of wine and fruit producers’ extra outlays for care and management of their crops after the July hail storm.

She said the Vienna Agriculture Chamber would pay compensation beginning early next year.

Hail storms lashed many areas of Austria this summer and damaged more than just crops.

Violent hail storms in Salzburg’s Flachgau left thousands of wild animals dead and many more severely injured, local hunters claimed at the end of July.

Bad weather this past summer left insurers with a bill of almost 500 million Euros, the Austrian insurance association said last month.

The association said insurers faced huge claims for damages after "exceptionally damaging weather such as storms, hail, heavy rain and flooding".
