Media Insider - a hit review
Austria is home to the world's most successful newspaper.
In a country with a population of 8 million there is a newspaper called the Kronen Zeitung that with a readership of 43 percent and over 1 million printed copies reaches every second Austrian.
It always claims to be first with the news – and that was certainly the case with its review of the George Michael concert last week.
Under the title George Michael's musical Pearl the Krone reviewer named Franziska Trost told readers how the singer had rocked the city – and went into great detail about the fantastic performance that she described as a "firework display of hits". He reportedly wowed the audience with songs like "Love is a losing game" and "Russian roulette" taking music from other stars and making it his own. There was also a spectacular 3-D effect on the cinema wall that moved the entire arena.
The only problem was that the concert never took place - because the singer was by that point in the intensive care ward at a local hospital.
I have tried all week to get a comment from the Krone but they have remained silent – so I guess we can take that as a no comment.
Whether it was an extremely small private performance given just for Fr. Trost - or – perish the thought – that one of the world's most successful newspapers has been caught making up its reports remains to be seen.
