Findus: Were Neigh Guilty

Horse meat scandal food giants Findus are facing a police investigation in Sweden, say the country's food safety watchdogs.

The Swedish-based firm could be charged under the country's Food Act for mislabelling lasagne ready meals as beef.

Sweden's minister of rural affairs Eskil Erlandsson described the scandal as a case of "cheating" and "fraud."

The country's National Food Agency will meet today (Monday) for crisis talks.

"We may report Findus to the police. We have not decided yet, though it would be a natural consequence of discovering errors like this," said NFA member Mona-Lisa Dahlbom-Wiedel.

"A group of people from across the Food Agency's departments will meet to try to map out what has happened and what we can do about it," she added.

But the frozen food giant's CEO Jari Latvanen has blamed French meat suppliers and processors.

"Comigel's and Spanghero's cheating is a scandal which has affected consumers across Europe," he said.
